Healthy Families America programs begin with workers spending time with pregnant women or new parents talking about their hopes and concerns surrounding parenthood and describing the program. Services are offered to families on a voluntary basis. Although NCPCA recognizes that all families deserve and can benefit from parenting education and supportive services, due to fiscal constraints, some HFA sites are offering services only to first-time parents or those facing the greatest challenges.

Home visits which can last up to five years, focus on parenting skills, child development, child health, and other aspects of family functioning. Healthy Families America programs collaborate with other organizations providing family support programs in order to utilize scarce resources, provide a comprehensive array of services to families, and avoid duplication of services.
