Those who came before us established our mission and our strategies.
We are proud to continue their work.

Our chapter network provides leadership for the work of child abuse prevention
at the grass roots level.

Just over thirty years ago child abuse was given a name. The "battered child syndrome," defined as serious nonaccidental physical injuries to children, was identified by C. Henry Kempe, MD. Since then we have learned a great deal about child abuse, its causes, and its prevention.

Donna J. Stone, recognizing that everyone must be accountable for this grave threat to our nation's children, established the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse (NCPCA) in 1972. NCPCA was founded as a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization committed to preventing child abuse in all its forms through education, research, public awareness, and advocacy.

Thanks to the effort of dedicated professionals, loyal volunteers, and generous donors, NCPCA has made significant strides in prevention efforts. To ensure that NCPCA's mission was replicated at the state level, the first NCPCA chapter was established in 1976. Today, NCPCA proudly boasts a nationwide network of 52 chapters and their local affiliates providing leadership for the work of child abuse prevention at the grass roots level.

The aim of each chapter is to be the prevention leader within the state. As the need for child abuse prevention grows and as resources become more scarce, NCPCA's chapter network focuses on trying to understand what the future will be like and how our collective roles may need to change and broaden to accomplish our goals. NCPCA's chapters will continue to work together to educate the public, empower individuals, involve communities, and most importantly, take responsibility to institutionalize the many advances in child abuse prevention we as a network have made so far.
