Building on previous relationships with the North Lawndale area of Chicago, NCPCA introduced an HFA demonstration site to the community in January 1995. Healthy Families North Lawndale is a collaborative effort among NCPCA, Family Focus (a family resource center), Mt. Sinai Hospital (the hospital serving the community), and the Lawndale Christian Health Center. Program services reached capacity in 1995, necessitating expansion in order to reach those families needing services in the North Lawndale community. This site, initiated by a challenge grant from the Freddie Mac Foundation, is one of the first established in the inner-city.
Another innovative demonstration project established HFA sites in the states of Nevada, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. With funding from the Kellogg Foundation, NCPCA and the Cooperative Extension System (CES) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture worked to develop a collaborative project to ascertain the feasibility of building an HFA program upon the CES delivery system. To this end, cooperative partnerships were established between the NCPCA chapter and CES system in each of the three states. Preliminary work involved site selection and program development. By mid-year, all three sites were operational. The success of this collaboration increases the likelihood of building HFA programs onto additional CES programs, which exist in every county across the country.
These demonstration projects provide NCPCA with the opportunity to maintain direct contact with HFA programs. The knowledge gained over time helps NCPCA continue to support professionals in the field with appropriate materials and technical assistance.
Pilot projects help us maintain direct contact with HFA programs.
