Our challenge is to educate the public about ways each person can make a difference.
Over the years, NCPCA's public awareness campaigns have succeeded in educating the public about the problem of child abuse. Our challenge in 1995 was to offer people ways to translate this knowledge into actions that help solve the problem. To educate the public about becoming part of the solution, we joined with the media and our network of chapters to focus our latest media campaign on informing the public about specific ways they can make a difference in their communities.
Call 800-CHILDREN and become part of the solution.
In cooperation with the Advertising Council and Bayer Bess Vanderwarker advertising agency, we launched a national media campaign consisting of public service announcements for television, radio, magazines, and newspapers with the tagline "The more you help, the less they hurt." These public service announcements invite the general public to get involved in our Healthy Families America initiative, and provide a toll free telephone number to call for information about the program and ways the public can help. Using cutting edge technology, callers from 12 states are directly connected with their NCPCA chapter. Concerned citizens calling 800-CHILDREN receive material about how they can establish HFA sites in their own communities as well as information about their state chapter of NCPCA and other local prevention organizations.
Michael Bolton helps us reach the public.
The telephone has become a very useful tool in our public education efforts. In addition to our 800-CHILDREN number, NCPCA provides a toll free information line 800-55-NCPCA, which gives the public access to material on a variety of topics relating to child abuse and parenting. This number is used in a series of television public service announcements featuring Michael Bolton, our Honorary Chairman, and several other celebrities. Television stations across the country have generously donated time for these public service announcements, and caller response is excellent.
New publications help parents care for their children.
Our catalog of publications has expanded to include several new titles, including companion pamphlets Welcome to Motherhood and Becoming a Father. These pamphlets offer valuable information to parents about caring for themselves as well as their children. In order to meet our commitment to disseminate up to the minute information, we develop working papers on subjects about which knowledge is increasing or data is changing rapidly. The working paper format allows us to update without publishing delays. Our Monthly Memorandum continues to provide professionals and the general public with current information about child abuse and its prevention. Using the theme "Everyone Has a Role to Play," we produced and distributed thousands of packets during Child Abuse Prevention Month in Cooperation with the U.S. National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect. These packets provide organizations and individuals with valuable information to help them involve their communities in public awareness and prevention activities. The American Amusement Machine Association (AAMA) annually provides NCPCA and its chapter network with a positive parenting poster featuring a celebrity. This year Jackie Joyner-Kersee was highlighted on a colorful poster with the theme "Follow Your Dream."
Public education provides resources so everyone can help.
