PREVENTION HISTORY

Prevent Child Abuse America (formerly the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse) was established in 1972 by Donna J. Stone to build a nationwide commitment to preventing all forms of child abuse. Donna was first made aware of the gravity and far reaching effects of the problem by Dr. Karl Menninger, who worked directly with abused children, and Dr. C. Henry Kempe, a pioneer in the child abuse field. She believed that everyone has a responsibility in providing the nation’s children with a safe and nurturing environment in which to grow.

As a result of this belief, Donna established an organization to prevent child abuse.  Since the general public knew little about the problem, Donna’s first step was to find a way to educate and inform the public about the insidious effects of abuse. Overcoming numerous challenges, she succeeded in convincing the Advertising Council that Prevent Child Abuse America could sustain a nationwide program to help end abuse. Through the support of the Advertising Council, Prevent Child Abuse America played a leading role in spreading the message of child abuse prevention to the public and encouraging the public to get involved.

The results of Prevent Child Abuse America’s efforts are dramatic. General awareness of the existence of the problem of child abuse has increased from less than 10% in 1976 to well over 90% today.  The public also is better educated about the long-term effects of various types of abuse such as physical and verbal abuse. In addition, where the public once saw government agencies alone as responsible for solving the problem of child abuse, the majority now believe that they can do something to prevent abuse.

Much of our success today is due to the leadership of Anne Cohn Donnelly, who was our Executive Director during the past 17 years. Her vision and dedication have built upon Donna Stone’s legacy to help make Prevent Child Abuse America the leading organization in child abuse prevention. We wish her well in her future endeavors.

Today, we continue to break new grounds in the field of prevention. Our organization is nationally recognized as one of the most innovative leaders in child abuse prevention. Our nationwide network of chapters and their local affiliates have worked to implement direct service programs in hundreds of communities. Our research has forged new paths in prevention strategies and programs. Through our media campaigns, people are finding ways they can help prevent abuse. We continue to equip professionals with the latest, proven prevention approaches through our training and technical assistance. And as a critical part of our prevention strategy, our advocacy efforts help shape national and local policies to build support and funding for prevention programs.

One of Prevent Child Abuse America’s most promising efforts is the Healthy Families America initiative. In partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Freddie Mac Corporation, we have been working to make sure that all new parents have an opportunity to get off to a good start. This initiative strengthens families by providing them with education and support services geared toward their specific needs -- right from the beginning.  Today, over 300 Healthy Families America programs are helping families in 40 states across the country.  We hope to see that number grow so that one day, all new parents will receive the help they need.
